Use gunzip path/to/cpio.gz to decompress the the archive followed by xz -9 /path/to/cpio to compress it. You'll have to convert the gzip archive into xz. Macports and GNU do NOT provide sufficient instructions. However, if you have installed gcc-without-xcode from the gzip archive, you cannot install XZ Utils and run make-gcc-without-xcode again.
